Recently, the talk of state budget cuts and government shut-downs seems to be dominating news broadcasts across the country. Lawmakers from the state legislature to the federal government tell us they are working to find places to save money. While I agree that cuts need to be made, I also question the honesty of the process. I once heard a prominent national preacher say that if you want to ascertain what you truly value in your own life, you need only look as far as your bank statements. The one thing missing from all of this necessary talk about budget cuts is a sincere look atwhat we value as Americans. If you read the blog last week, you know I have been considering whether the Gospel calls us toward a different set of values or beliefsconcerning the use of our tax dollars. In light of this discussion, I have found myself asking the questions: What do we really value as people of faith? Do we really value education? What about caring for those who cannot care for themselves? Do we value providing medical care to those who cannot afford it?

I came across this article today that highlights Jim Wallis and the “What Would Jesus Cut?” movement that is currently afoot. It makes some interesting points:

What do you think about the “What Would Jesus Cut?” campaign? Do the budget cuts reflect your values as a Christian?
